I think that's how Churchill persuaded the Sikhs to tag along. I think he promised them all Kebab shop rights should the invasion of Turkey be successful

Re: ANZAC Day, 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings
Lets hear it for the Newfoundlanders.... they had a right touch from Gallipoli to the Somme!!

http://www.heritage.nf.ca/greatwar/articles/gallipoli.html

The Gallipoli Campaign had reduced the Newfoundland Regiment to 17 officers and 470 other ranks. Forty-four of its men had died and hundreds more were recovering from enemy fire or disease in military hospitals. The Regiment withdrew to Egypt for two months of training and recuperation.

In the spring, it was ordered to the River Somme in northern France.

Re: ANZAC Day, 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings
Sikhs fought alongside the Anzacs at Gallipoli with the 14th Sikh Regiment suffering possibly the highest casualty rate of any force during the Gallipoli campaign, with only 4 survivors.
379 Sikh officers died on the 4th of June in 1915; it virtually wiped out the 14th Sikh Regiment.
These Sikhs were mostly from India, but research by Australian Sikh Heritage has also identified ten Sikhs from Australia who served as part of the Australian Imperial Force during WWI.

I haven't seen it no, but have heard good things. Don't get to the flicks much these days so will download it when I can find a good copy.

As for the Maoris, yeah they had loads of fights, but I'm reasonably sure that none of them involved assaulting a beach riddled with machine guns, barbed wire and Turks!

Re: ANZAC Day, 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings
Exactly right 67, and as I said, you British are used to conflict, wars, death etc with all of the invasions and civil conflict over there over history, while for little old New Zealand it was our first experience with it really.

Re: ANZAC Day, 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings
For small nations though Swiss comparatively in population size it was a massive blow and don't forget they were fighting for us , there was no territorial threat to Austrailia or NZ
